“Pawsitive Pals” San Diego Hospice Pet Therapy Program

It’s clear from the look on their faces that those receiving hospice care love having their furry pals come to visit. The benefits of pet therapy to patients are numerous, including lowering anxiety and providing companionship.

All kinds of animals make good therapy pets. Cats, rabbits, horses, pigs and more have been certified to assist in therapy. While the requirements are slightly different for each species, they must all be potty trained, comfortable with a leash and healthy, with basic obedience training and no history of aggression.

There are some guidelines for human partners, as well. Handlers should be able to detect stress in their pet, anticipate their behavior and know how to redirect their animal’s behavior in a positive way.
