Bioluminescence is making Tasmania look like a different planet

Photographers and scientists have flocked to southern Tasmania to enjoy the phenomena, caused by blooms of single-cell organisms called dinoflagellates — nicknamed Sea Sparkles — which light up when disturbed.

“I’ve seen a lot of bioluminescence in the past 25 years and this is the best I’ve ever seen,” Jellyfish expert Lisa-Ann Gershwin told Hobart. “It was the most wondrous sight imaginable.”
